India AI Mission launches Varya, an affordable indigenous video story generating AI model developed by Avtaar.ai.
India AI Mission launches Indigenous Varya video story generating AI model.India AI Mission has launched Varya, a new indigenous video story generating AI model. The launch took place today at a press event in New Delhi. Avtaar.ai developed the model with support from the India AI Mission. Shri S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), attended the event.
Varya brings affordable AI video generation service to India at population scale. It claims to offer quality at an affordable price. The model cuts video generation time from 50 steps to just 4 steps. This makes it ten times more efficient than several leading models.
Varya Delivers Efficiency and Cultural Relevance
Varya uses a distillation technique that maintains comparable output quality while reducing steps. According to Avtaar’s internal inference-cost benchmarks, it can generate video at ₹0.48 per second. This cost efficiency makes advanced video AI accessible for India’s needs. The model is designed for India’s many contexts. It understands and generates culturally rich visual outputs across regions, festivals, communities, food, clothing, public spaces and everyday life. Users from education to e-commerce can benefit. A teacher can create visual lessons in a village classroom. An MSME can make product ads. Citizens can access public information through video.
The product experience follows a simple flow: Idea to Video to Story. Users type an idea, upload an image, generate a video, and continue the story with additional clips. One prompt can become a lesson, an ad, a guide, a film or a memory.Avtaar was among the companies selected by the IndiaAI Mission to build indigenous foundation AI capabilities. Access to subsidized national AI compute infrastructure helped develop Varya. This shows how public AI infrastructure can accelerate homegrown innovation.
Speaking at the launch, Secretary S. Krishnan said, “The launch of one of the foundational models supported under the IndiaAI Mission marks a significant milestone in India’s AI journey. Varya represents the kind of research-led capability building that we seek to enable. It is a proud moment that reflects our commitment to building indigenous AI capabilities and fostering a vibrant deep-tech ecosystem. Through strategic support for foundational models, we are enabling innovation at scale and creating the building blocks for the next generation of AI solutions. We look forward to further strengthening India’s AI capabilities and advancing frugal innovation that is both world class and accessible at population scale”.

Avtaar CEO and Co-Founder Sravanth Aluru said, “India’s AI opportunity will not be defined only by the largest models. It will also be defined by the most efficient models. Varya demonstrates that frontier-quality video AI can be made dramatically more efficient and accessible. For a country of 1.4 billion people, affordability is not a feature, it is a prerequisite. We believe the next billion stories, lessons, advertisements, services and experiences will be created through AI, and those capabilities must be available to everyone, not just a few.”
He added, “Affordable AI is inclusive AI. What Avataar is building with Varya is important because it shifts the conversation from AI capability alone to AI accessibility. India has the talent, the market depth and the imagination to build AI products for population-scale use. Varya is a strong example of how Indian companies can compete globally, not by simply building bigger models, but by building more efficient, context-aware models that expand access.”

As video becomes the primary medium for learning, commerce, communication and storytelling, tools like Varya become important. The model aims to turn simple ideas into moving stories at scale. For India’s population of over 1.4 billion, efficiency supports inclusion.People can expect easier access to high-quality video generation. Users across sectors will benefit from faster and cheaper video creation. Avtaar will publish a technical report outlining Varya’s model architecture, distillation methodology and benchmarks.
Distilled video generation is a model compression technique. A compact student model replicates outputs of a larger teacher model. It transfers capabilities while removing redundant computation. Standard models use over 50 noisy steps. Varya delivers similar quality in just a few iterations. This is the first such application to video in India at this scale.
The India AI Mission launch of Varya highlights progress in indigenous AI development. It supports the goal of making advanced tools available to millions across the country. Users should watch for updates from Avtaar on how to access Varya for their video needs in education, business and daily communication.
