Delhi’s Major Win: 98 Lakh 12th Class Answer Sheets Scanned Flawlessly

Sanjay Kumar highlights how scanning of answer sheets has removed totalling mistakes in 12th class exams.

Delhi has completed large-scale scanning of answer sheets from the 12th class exams. Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy, shared details of the process that ensures greater accuracy in result preparation. This time the answer sheets of all students who took the 12th class exams were scanned. PDF copies were created and three levels of security were maintained during the scanning process. The total number of answer sheets scanned reached 98 lakh.

Benefits of Scanned Answer Sheets

The scanning process has brought clear improvements. Mistakes that sometimes happened in totalling have been completely eliminated. Teachers received training for the new system. The decision to scan answer sheets has made the evaluation process more reliable.Sanjay Kumar explained the steps taken to maintain accuracy. Special attention was given to security levels and other issues so that the marking done through on-screen marking remains correct.

Handling of Unclear Answer Sheets

Officials found some challenges during the process. About 13,000 answer sheets showed illegibility even after repeated scanning. This happened because the ink used was of very light colour. These 13,000 answer sheets were taken out separately. Teachers checked them manually. The marks obtained on those sheets were then entered into the system.

Sanjay Kumar said, “This time when the 12th class exams were conducted, the answer sheets were scanned, and their PDF copies were made. The total number of answer sheets of 98 lakh students who took the examination was scanned, and three levels of security were also maintained in scanning… One advantage of this has been that the mistakes that sometimes used to happen in totalling have been completely eliminated. This decision was taken, and teachers were trained in this… Ultimately, it was also found that in the end, we had about 13,000 such answer sheets, which we found that no matter how many times we scanned them, there was some illegibility in them because the ink used was of very light colour, so after scanning, we were not able to make that legible. The teachers were told that the 13,000 answer sheets were taken out and checked manually, and after checking manually, the marks obtained on those were introduced by us. I would like to say that special attention has been given to the security level and the issues, so that the marking done through on-screen marking is accurate…”

Students and parents can expect more accurate results due to these steps. The new process reduces chances of human error in totalling marks. Authorities have focused on both technology and manual checks where needed. The scanning of 12th class answer sheets marks a shift towards digital evaluation with strong safeguards. This approach is likely to build more trust in the examination system.
