India’s first indigenous hydrogen train is set to begin operations soon. The 10-car train with a 1200 KW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system has received approval from Indian Railways. It will run on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway at a maximum speed of 75 kmph.
This development makes India part of an elite group of nations using hydrogen fuel cell technology for clean rail operations. Countries like Germany, Japan, China, and the United States are already exploring or testing similar systems. The train produces electricity through a chemical reaction with hydrogen, releasing only water vapour as emission.
Key Features of India’s First Indigenous Hydrogen Train
The hydrogen train features a dedicated indigenous hydrogen storage and refuelling facility at Jind in Haryana. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has granted the necessary licence for storage and dispensing of compressed hydrogen gas.
A hydrogen compression system is in place for refuelling. Standby compressor units and critical spares have also been provided to ensure reliable and safe functioning. Various safety sensors, including hydrogen leak detectors and flame detectors, have been installed at the production, storage, and dispensing facility.
Safety and Operational Protocols
Indian Railways has put in place comprehensive safety measures. Operation and maintenance manuals approved by RDSO are available. Regular inspection and cleaning of sensors will prevent dust accumulation and support safe operations.
The approval includes 24×7 monitoring of the hydrogen refuelling system. Trained and certified personnel will handle critical operations. During the initial phase, trained technical staff will accompany the train. Standard operating procedures and regular audits will be followed at the maintenance facility in Shakurbasti.
This greener and more energy efficient hydrogen train supports India’s national goals for clean energy and net-zero carbon emissions. Passengers on the Jind-Sonipat section can expect a new clean transportation option in the coming days.
The project highlights Indian Railways’ focus on innovation and sustainable mobility. As operations begin, the pilot project on this dedicated section will provide important learnings for wider adoption of hydrogen technology in Indian Railways.
The introduction of India’s first indigenous hydrogen train marks an important milestone in the country’s journey towards environmentally sustainable transportation. It promises cleaner air and more energy efficient rail services for the future.
