India Celebrates Historic Milestone with 100th Ramsar Site

India has reached a significant conservation milestone with the addition of the Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary.The Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary, also known as Surha Tal, is located in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. Its designation marks India’s 100th Ramsar Site of international importance. The announcement came on June 5, 2026.

The latest addition is an oxbow lake spread over approximately 34.32 square kilometers. It was declared a bird sanctuary by the Uttar Pradesh government in 1991.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the development. He posted on X that it represents “a century as far as Ramsar sites are concerned.” He expressed gladness over the new designation for the Ballia sanctuary.

Details of Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary

The sanctuary, popularly called Surha Tal, lies near Basantpur village, about 17 kilometers from Ballia district headquarters. It was formed by consolidating land from 45 villages, covering around 3432.93 hectares. Local people still refer to the water body as Surha Tal.

Ramsar Sites are wetlands recognized under the Ramsar Convention for their international importance. They support rich biodiversity, provide habitats for birds and other wildlife, and help in water management and climate resilience.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “A century as far as Ramsar sites are concerned! Glad that the Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh has been designated as India’s 100th Ramsar site.”

This new status is expected to boost eco-tourism and conservation efforts in the region. It will bring international attention to the sanctuary and help strengthen protection measures for the wetland and its surrounding ecosystem.
